Not So Black and White: An Invitation to Honest Conversations about Race and Faith Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Adam -- A real, humble, captivating read on the intersection of race and the Christian faith : The writers, Dabbs and Driver, articulate real, reasonable, humble, empathetic conversations that need to be had among Black and white Christians if there is any hope of racial reconciliation within the Church. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Emily -- This book is long overdue : I saw this book on Good Morning America. I was excited to see a conversation about racism from a Christian perspective. But I was also a bit hesitant that a book like this would wash over the real issue with fluff and a bunch of plucked-from-context Scripture. BUT WOW! This book is not that. The authors share personal stories and certainly have a faith-based perspective, but they don't shy away from the difficult, ugly parts of history that have ignited and perpetuated racism in America—a history that unfortunately has deep roots in the Church. Dabbs & Driver disarm the conversation by calling out the things that offend us and often bring conversations like this to a screeching halt. Removing that armor allows the reader to evaluate their own thinking and biases rather than questioning what we know to be true from historical accounts or personal anecdotes like those shared by Dabbs. The research is thorough and proves the issue and the conversation is an authentic, humble example of gospel-centered reform. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C. Serrano -- Scholarly AND accessible…A must read! : . None of those tactics are educated. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scott M Gillis -- Compelling and convicting - a book to read and share! : They went there. Reggie Dabbs and John Driver present an honest, comprehensive account of a topic that has been a source of polarization, division, and confusion in America - and in the Church. Yet, these authors address systemic racism in a manner that does anything but divide; through this book, they welcome readers into an authentic conversation about the historical roots of racism, and they invite us to evaluate facets of our society (and ourselves) that perpetuate inequality between Black and white individuals. My wife and I were challenged, humbled, and encouraged by the candor of these two friends - and their passion for using both historical data and judicious use of Scripture to support the need for change: “Equipped with an understanding of our past and the courage the gospel provides, we can forge ahead as we seek to listen with empathy, respond rightly, and work together toward change.” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
